So, despite the cheap car parking at Wentworth Street, the expected upsurge in customer base failed to materialise. In fact, not only did the trial fail but about two thousand cars less came to Malton than in the previous year. Why is this?
The reality is that Malton needs to offer what the customer wants. It needs quality promotion, access, retail offer, infrastructure, secure safe environment and customer facilities. I know this because the ‘Lockwood Survey’ tells me. This is probably just like the estate press release telling us that we need more bookshops and telling us that the rents are comparable to other areas.
The reality is that every trick in the book must be tried to entice people back to Malton. I remember when we used to have the Carnival, pram race, raft race etc – community events. Apathy killed them off. How many retailers attend the Business in Action Group. How many customers shop on the Internet or at Monks Cross. Why won’t the estate consider reducing the rent, a half rent used shop must be better than a full rent empty shop. Factors such as these have to be considered by EVERYONE before Malton goes into self destruction. Just like the Town Centre Manager, you don’t notice them when they are here, but by eck, you do notice them when they’re not. I shop in Malton, why don’t you?
